The Social Networking Explosion: Where Do You Belong?
As if MySpace weren’t enough, countless new social networking sites are popping up on the Internet every day. Whether you’re a sports, book or movies fan, you’re sure to find the right network of like-minded people at an URL near you.
But social networking isn’t just for fun. Performers and bands have long used websites like MySpace to break into the industry, promote their work and increase their fan base. But now, some colleges and churches are starting to develop profiles to build awareness and begin a dialog with interested members. Some colleges with MySpace profiles include San Francisco State, Boston University college of Communication and Graduate Admissions and Ohio’s Hiram College.
Not a MySpace fan? Here’s just a sampling of the new social networks at your disposal:
- Orkut (orkut.com): A general online meeting place for friends
- LinkedIn (linkedin.com): A career networking system
- United Methodist Communications (umcom.org): An online social network for Methodists
- Spout (spout.com): A growing online network for movie fans eager to share reviews
- Boompa (boompa.com): Where you can meet other auto fans and share advice
- Minti (minti.com): Where parents can find friends, get support and advice
- Sponsorhouse (sponsorhouse.com): A growing athletic social network
- Gather (gather.com): Uniting members by interest, including books, food, health, money, movies, music, news, politics and travel
- YouTube (youtube.com): Using video as a means of social networking
- Facebook (facebook.com): Building networks based on company, region, high school or college affiliation
- MySpace (myspace.com): Possibly the largest social networking website simply defined as “a place for friends”
- Flickr (flickr.com): A social networking website for those who want to share through photos
Not interested in the broad selection of networks already developed? No problem. Ning.com gives you a free way to create your own custom video, photo or group social website.
So, now, the only thing you’ll need to determine is how many profiles you want to create.

Planning a winter retreat? If it’s your first ski trip, CNN.com offers some tips on avoiding the most common pitfalls, like wardrobe malfunctions, inadequate equipment and cost cutting (which sometimes isn’t quite worth it’s weight in gold).
