Ireland: Go Green In The Land of Enchantment

You can drink ale at the local Irish pub. But that’s hardly a celebration. Wear green from head-to-toe, dance, sing and engulf yourself in the sounds of folk music and festivities in Ireland this St. Patrick’s Day (March 17). Dublin is full of life each March, with an entire week honoring Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

The holiday began centuries ago when, in 461 AD, Saint Patrick passed away. Born a pagan and sold into slavery, Patrick used his time in captivity to build a closer bond with God. Six years later, he escaped and began study under St. Germain, the then bishop of Auxerre. Patrick dedicated the remainder of his years converting pagans to Christianity.

For three decades, he traveled across Ireland, establishing monasteries, schools and churches. Today, the world takes part in Ireland’s commemoration, and Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is typically lined with more than 500,000 people. Smaller Irish cities, towns and villages including Cork, Galway, Belfast, Waterford and Limerick host similar, but smaller,
parades. The holiday itself only acquired non-secular, in addition to its secular, recognition in 1995.

The week-long extravaganza includes music, family carnivals, street theater and performances, taste fests, dance, treasure hunts and incredible evening displays amid the lush green Irish countryside. Watch elaborate and colorful floats, flamboyant costumes, fast music and breathtaking fireworks while tasting delicious foods and ales.

This year, delight in the National Lottery Sky fest, an incredible light show with fireworks, special effects and rambunctious musicamid the river at the north and south quays. The 2007 National Lottery Sky fest is expected to be one of the biggest celebrations Dublin has ever seen.

During your stay, feast on lamb, seafood of roasted meat, vegetables and potatoes with fresh, local ingredients. Relax and sip on the country’s most famous export: dark, stout, dry beer including Guinness, Murphy’s and Beamish’s. You’ll also find popular micro-breweries in more rural areas.

After a full day packed with events and entertainment, return to a warm and plush bed at one of the country’s most luxurious hotels, guesthouses or Bed and Breakfasts. A guesthouse provides elegant surroundings – from incredible Georgian manors to quaint rural homes.

Hostels are also available for the budget-conscious in Dublin or, for a more natural excursion, in the outskirts of town. Most hotels and upscale accommodations provide guest with wholesome breakfasts to get the day started.

Article of the Week

Vasrue.com Celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month: The Journey Continues

Since 1926 when Harvard scholar Dr. Carter G. Woodson organized the first Negro History Week, the U.S., U.K. and Canada have celebrated Black History Month, paying tribute to those who’ve dramatically impacted our lives. Beginning in February in North America, the period coincides with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two pivotal figures in African American history.

Prior to Woodson’s work in spear-heading annual recognition, African Americans were sparsely recognized in texts. Instead, coverage largely revolved around social positions, overlooking the monumental impact of those individuals who shaped politics, music and literature.

Today, the four-week period aims to expose centuries of racial discrimination and prejudice that have impacted, influenced and molded African Americans. It also aims to recognize the enormous contributions made by men and women of African descent.

The Social Networking Explosion: Where Do You Belong?

As if MySpace weren’t enough, countless new social networking sites are popping up on the Internet every day. Whether you’re a sports, book or movies fan, you’re sure to find the right network of like-minded people at an URL near you.

But social networking isn’t just for fun. Performers and bands have long used websites like MySpace to break into the industry, promote their work and increase their fan base. But now, some colleges and churches are starting to develop profiles to build awareness and begin a dialog with interested members. Some colleges with MySpace profiles include San Francisco State, Boston University college of Communication and Graduate Admissions and Ohio’s Hiram College.

Not a MySpace fan? Here’s just a sampling of the new social networks at your disposal:

- Orkut (orkut.com): A general online meeting place for friends

- LinkedIn (linkedin.com): A career networking system

- United Methodist Communications (umcom.org): An online social network for Methodists

- Spout (spout.com): A growing online network for movie fans eager to share reviews

- Boompa (boompa.com): Where you can meet other auto fans and share advice

- Minti (minti.com): Where parents can find friends, get support and advice

- Sponsorhouse (sponsorhouse.com): A growing athletic social network

- Gather (gather.com): Uniting members by interest, including books, food, health, money, movies, music, news, politics and travel

- YouTube (youtube.com): Using video as a means of social networking

- Facebook (facebook.com): Building networks based on company, region, high school or college affiliation

- MySpace (myspace.com): Possibly the largest social networking website simply defined as “a place for friends”

- Flickr (flickr.com): A social networking website for those who want to share through photos

Not interested in the broad selection of networks already developed? No problem. Ning.com gives you a free way to create your own custom video, photo or group social website.

So, now, the only thing you’ll need to determine is how many profiles you want to create.

A New Trend For An Ancient Practice

Life’s more stressful than ever, with Americans struggling to find time in their daily routine for exercise. But fitness can calm your spirits, refocus your mind and give you more energy to get everything done. It’s an important part of a healthy lifestyle. No longer a trend for new-agers or 60’s flower children, Yoga has taken a resurgence in popularity in the past few years. This trend isn’t surprising when you consider all of the health benefits it offers.

Yoga is a philosophy developed thousands of years ago in India, focusing on a deeper connection between mind, body and spirit. It’s goal is in quieting the mind and invoking a sense of well-being and empowerment.
